Open book: Married Stone – The natural beauty of the veins

I’m sure you’ve seen stone work similar to the image below. The open book process – married stone, enhances the natural beauty of the stone and its veins.

Figure 1: Married Pele Tigre marble, Work at Quinta da Beloura

This continuous look comes about because the stone slabs (slices) are placed in an open book effect. In other words, there is a marriage of the pieces in which the natural veins are continuous and look like a single piece.

The surfaces, which were facing each other when the block was cut into sheet metal, are polished in a different way to usual and form a mirrored pattern with a kaleidoscopic effect.

The choice of garments

Combining the pieces with each other requires a lot of attention and requires them to be applied in large spaces in order to accommodate a large expanse of stone and its natural design. For example, wall cladding, flooring, showers and large tables. Matched pieces have a greater impact on larger projects. However, they can also be used in smaller projects, excluding projects with corners or cut-outs.

Figure 2: Checking the shafts

It is necessary to ensure that the pattern passes fluidly from one piece to the next, so that it looks like a single piece in order to guarantee the harmony and aesthetics of the piece.

Nature’s gift

The most interesting thing is that these designs are formed by nature and convey a unique and exotic beauty that gives an impactful look to the projects in which the pieces are applied.
